Understanding Body Mass Index
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple screening tool that measures body fat based on height and weight. It is calculated as weight (kg) divided by the square of height (m²). While BMI doesn't measure body fat directly, it correlates with more direct measures and is used by WHO as a quick population-level health indicator.
BMI categories: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25–29.9), and Obese (30+). Note that BMI may not be accurate for athletes, elderly, or pregnant individuals, as it does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass.
